Character LCD Displays
Character LCD displays are a category of display modules designed specifically for the presentation of alphanumeric text, symbols, and basic custom characters. Unlike graphic displays that control individual pixels, character LCDs are built around a predefined character generator ROM, which contains pixel patterns for letters, numbers, and special symbols. This makes them exceptionally simple to use and highly efficient for applications where displaying clear text is the primary requirement.
The vast majority of character LCD modules are based on the industry-standard Hitachi HD44780 controller or its compatible counterparts, such as the SPLC780. This standardization ensures a high degree of interchangeability and simplifies the development process, as the communication protocols and command sets are widely documented and supported across multiple platforms.
Character LCDs are available in a variety of configurations, most commonly specified by the number of columns and rows, such as 16×2 (16 characters per line, 2 lines) or 20×4. Each character position is typically formed by a 5×8 dot matrix pixel block, although some variants may use a 5×10 matrix for enhanced legibility. This modular design provides a clean, grid-based presentation, making these displays ideal for status reporting, user menus, and device interfaces.
