hdr tvs are the real deal when it comes to putting a better looking picture on your screen

With 4k resolution and hdr (
High Dynamic Range)technology.
In a recent article, I pointed out that the 4k resolution on the TV screen has little improvement on the pictures most people see in part, because this technology exceeds the human eye\'s ability to solve details, most people sit far away from the TV.
The limitation lies in the ergonomics of the human eye, not the 4k image or the gear used to view it.
On the other hand, the HDR part overcomes the inherent limitations of HD (HD)
TV, thus narrowing the gap between the content on the screen and what the eyes can see.
The result is an improvement in the quality of the pictures that can be easily seen and appreciated.
What is HDR and what should you know if you want to buy an hdr TV?
HDRin theory, if handled properly, hdrim can prove the image on the video screen in two ways.
It creates richer and more dynamic images by increasing the contrast between the lightest and darkest areas of the screen, and makes more realistic images possible by increasing the number of colors the screen can display.
Contrast is often considered to be one of the most important factors in determining how good a screen image looks to an audience.
The low-contrast screen becomes flat and faded, while the high-contrast produces very dark and bright areas, which are very bright.
The result is rich in detail, colorful and seems to pop up from the screen.
HD TVs and Blu-Use 8-ray Disc
The bit color encoding of 16 is allowed to be displayed.
7 million colors.
This is a lot of colors, but it is not close to the range of colors that the human eye can see.
CurrentHDR TV month-
Allow bit color coding of more than one billion colors.
Again, there is no subtlety in the color that the eyes can discern, but it is more than 8-
Hd TV is a bit of a color.
The result is that the picture looks more real and has fewer color bands.
HDR screen is expected to support 12-
Bit color coding will provide more lifelike pictures.
The HDR of the actual screen manufacturer is not shy about describing their product, which may mean anything, as long as they seem to impress consumers who are gullible or don\'t know much about the technology they buy.
The word \"HDR\" is no exception.
To prevent abuse of the term, an organization of almost every well --
Well-known screen manufacturers and content providers in the video entertainment industry have worked together to develop technical standards for HDR screens.
They call themselves UHD Alliance and the screen that meets their standards is marked with the \"Ultra HD Premium\" logo.
The Ultra HD Premium screen must meet the minimum specifications for screen resolution, contrast and color depth.
The minimum screen resolution is set to 3840x2160 pixels.
This is the \"4 k\" screen that resolution screen manufacturers are selling, and any well-known manufacturer\'s 4k screen will meet this standard.
When it comes to contrast, the Ultra HD Premium and contrast are complicated.
The UHD Alliance sets two standards for contrast because there are significant differences in the way OLED and led LCD TVs light up their screens.
A little technical background is needed to solve this problem.
Screen brightness is usually measured with nits, one of which is equal to onecandela per square meter.
Contrast is usually calculated as the brightness of the brightest area of the screen measured by nits divided by the brightness of the darkest area of the screen.
Until several manufacturers began to produce OLED TVs (organic light-emitting diode)screens.
The pixels on the led LCD screen are lit by the LED located behind or at the edge of the screen.
The black produced by this way of lighting will never be completely black
There is always some light coming through.
Each pixel on the OLED screen emits its own light.
This means full black can be achieved by turning off pixels.
Pixels do not glow, and the brightness value of the darkest area of the screen is zero.
If you enter zero as a denominator when calculating contrast, regardless of the difference between the darkest and lightest areas of the screen, you will get an infinite scale.
That\'s no use.
In order for the oled screen to reach an Ultra HD Premium, the UHA alliance sets a standard for contrast with brightness above 540 nits, combined with the black horizontal below0. 0005 nits.
This is for OLED screens with a black level of 0.
However, the led LCD screen is not close to this standard.
To suit the led LCD screen, UHA Allianace sets a second standard for contrast, which is higher than 1,000 nits, combined with the black level below0. 05 nits.
The screen matches 1,000/If you calculate /.
The contrast of the 05 standard is 20,000: 1, while the screen that meets 540.
The 0005 standard has a ratio of 1,080,000: 1.
This is a huge difference, and it helps a lot in explaining why professional TV technology critics generally think OLED screens have the best pictures you can buy.
The better contrast of OLED screens does not mean that these are the only HDR screens you should consider.
The OLED screen is darker overall than the led LCD screen, and you may prefer the led LCD HDR screen if you prefer bright screen images.
Ultra HD premiere and color mentioned earlier, 10-
Bit color coding allows more than one billion colors.
However, you won\'t see so many colors on the HDR screen.
The ultra high definition advanced standard stipulates that the screen must be able to handle 10-
Bit color coding.
They didn\'t ask for the actual display of all colors, possibly with the month-bit encoding.
While you can\'t see more than a billion colors on the HDR screen, you\'ll see a lot more colors than standard HD TVs.
What color will you see?
There is no clear answer to this question and a little background of color space is needed to understand why.
Color space is a visual spectral area defined for use in visual media.
Content providers and OEMs making video devices rely on everyone who uses the same color space to ensure consistency in the colors consumers expect to see.
10-color space
The content and screen are called DCI P3 spaces (
Shown above).
Screen manufacturers often refer to the color space as a color field, and they talk about the wide range of color fields that HDR screens have because P3 space includes multiple colors (
A little more than 50% of the visible spectrum)than the Rec.
709 color space (
About 35% of the visible spectrum)
HD screen and blue light-ray discs.
The Ultra HD advanced standard does not require the HDR screen to be able to display each color in P3 space.
Instead, the standard states that HDR screens must be able to display at least 90% of the P3 color.
Sometimes this will be called a screen with a 90% color gamut.
For Ultra HD advanced status, the HDR screen must meet the following criteria.
These standards are developed in terms of minimum requirements to allow for technological progress, thereby increasing the time of HDRover.
For example, the color depth is expected to move to 12-
Use the bit color coding of Rec.
The color space of 2020 is wider than the color range of p3.
Maverick screen makerEvery main screen manufacturer is a member of the UHD Alliance and supports Ultra HD advanced standards in addition to one.
Vizio has not joined the alliance yet and they have publicly rejected the Ultra HD Premium standard.
Vizio claims that due to too low standards, the screen quality of some ultra-HD premiers will be poor.
Their reasoning is that the UHD Alliance\'s set criteria for performance features such as brightness level and dark level do not specify that these performance features should be measured.
This opens the door for unscrupulous screen makers who can manipulate their performance metrics using a questionnaire measurement practice to reach ultra-high definition advanced standards.
Vizio is not only not satisfied with the quality of the standard.
Apparently, their topof-the-
The 1,000/line reference series TV cannot be satisfied.
05 nits comparison requirements are specified by the UHD Alliance, although Vizio claims that they have 800,000: 1 different HDR format on their screen. There\'s another wrinkle in the HDR story, which we \'ve seen before
Different HDR formats.
This is another format war every consumer wants.
HDR10 is an open standard, which means that the content creators and OEMs who make video devices do not have to pay a license fee to use it.
Another format is Dolby Vision, which means that anyone who uses it must pay Dolby and install Dolby hardware on their device.
HDR10 supports the technical standards specified by ultra HD Premium.
Dolby Vision surpassed them.
For example, HDR10 supports 10-
Dolby Vision can handle 12-bit colorsbit color.
There is currently no commercial screen available to do 12-bit color.
The HDR10 format supports the maximum brightness level of 1,000 nits, while Dolby Vision can support up to 10,000 nits.
Similarly, the current HDR screen cannot produce bright areas of more than 1,000 nits.
The clear leader at the moment is HDR10 for obvious reasons.
Sony, Samsung and Sharp support hdr10 only.
Both are supported by LG, Vizio and Phillips.
So far, there is no dedicated HDR Blu-ray
Blu-ray player or HDR Blu-ray
Ray discs that support Dolby Vision.
Vudu only supports Dolby Vision.
Xbox One S can play HDR games and Blu-ray
Ray discs, but only if they are in HDR10.
Keep in mind that if you want to watch content in HDR, your media player, screen, and content must all support the same format, and HDR10 is the format currently providing maximum access to HDR materials
Over time, with the improvement of hdrtechnology, it is not clear how this will change.
Is it time to buy hdr TV?
This is the question that everyone must answer for themselves.
HDR, on the other hand, is expensive.
In addition, Vizio raised questions about the advanced standards for Ultra HD, which should ensure that consumers get high
High quality devices when they buy anHDR TV.
There is also a format conflict between HDR10 and Dolby Vision, which may result in HDR gear not being widely supported in the end.
On the positive side, the Ultra HD Premium HDR screen will almost certainly give you a 1080p HD screen than you currently have, it\'s even a better picture of the early model 4k screen without HDR.
Once you see it, that photo is hard to resist.
The idea I started working on this article is that now is a good time to buy a new screen.
I have come to the conclusion that, for me at least, waiting is a better option.
As usual, your mileage may vary.
