A touchscreen converts physical touch into electrical signals to enable precise interaction with the TFT LCD display. The industry standard is capacitive touch technology, which operates as follows:
Electric Field Generation: The touch sensor layer is coated with a transparent conductive material (typically ITO – Indium Tin Oxide). When active, the touch controller IC generates a uniform low-voltage electric field across the sensing lines.
Touch Interference: When a finger (or active stylus) approaches or contacts the screen surface, it absorbs or alters the local current, causing a measurable change in the electric field at that point.
Coordinate Calculation: The touch controller continuously scans for capacitance changes across the sensor grid. Using proprietary algorithms, it accurately calculates the X/Y coordinates of the touch point.
Command Execution: The coordinate data is transmitted to the host device's motherboard via an FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) cable. The system then maps the touch position to the current UI displayed on the TFT LCD, triggering the appropriate response (e.g., tap, swipe, pinch-to-zoom).
Resistive touchscreens operate by physical pressure causing two conductive layers to make contact. While lower in cost, they offer inferior optical clarity and limited multi-touch capability, and have been largely superseded by capacitive technology in most applications.
